Jörg Bachmann (Alpha 3, Postdoc at KTH)

Research topic: As an evolutionary biologist with experience in molecular biology, I use genetic information to study how species are created, maintained and changed by evolutionary processes. I am currently working on a project to uncover the role of changes in gene regulation in the domestication of dogs from wolf ancestors.

Council topic: Social media

Motivation: I see scientific communication and outreach as a way to promote accessibility, transparency and repeatability in science. I often use sketches and doodles in visual communication.

Eva Brinkman (Gamma 4/5, Postdoc at Karolinska Institute)

Research topic: Gene expression in cells is driven by transcription and co-factors. However, the expression of these protein can vary greatly even in genetically identical cells. To understand this process, I will measure gene expression of individual cells in relation to specific combinations of transcription and co-factors.

Council topic: Campus Solna seminar series

Ryan Hull (Gamma 4/5, Postdoc at Karolinska Institute)

Research topic: RNA degradation is essential for correct gene expression and RNA quality control. It is also tightly connected to the translation process. I am developing new transcriptomic methods to investigate the interplay between translation and RNA degradation in single cells and cancer.

Council topic: Campus Solna seminar series

Motivation: Along with Eva, I set-up and continue to run the Solna seminars as a means to promote collaboration and the exchange of ideas between groups in SciLifeLab.

Aswathy Kallazhi (Gamma 5, PhD student at Stockholm University)

Research topic: Lon protease is known to affect pathogenicity in the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa but the mechanisms or pathways involved are unknown. I investigate novel substrates of Pseudomonas Lon to determine the biochemical basis and the physiological significance of these interactions in the context of pathogenicity.

Council topic: BAM seminar, PhD Intro Seminar

Motivation: I want to be part of a fun and engaging community of researchers who are working to organise events that represent and promote the interests of PhD/PostDoc students. I hope to contribute to the events focused on the periphery of science, that will be valuable in shaping the future outlook of early-stage researchers like myself.

Iurii Petrov (Gamma 6, PhD student at Karolinska Insitutet)

Research topic: I am a bioinformatician using network science, machine learning and artificial intelligence in cancer research.

Motivation: I joined the PhD/Postdoc council to meet with other researchers at SciLifeLab and contribute to events that can bring the SciLifeLab community together.

Lucie Rodriguez (Alpha 1, PhD student at Karolinska Institutet)

Research topic: My research mainly focuses on systems-level analyses as a means to dissect the immune system in patients with poorly-defined inflammatory conditions. Currently, I study the developing immune system of newborns.

Council topic: Campus Solna seminar series, Science Talks 2021, PhD Intro Seminar

Motivation: I joined the PhD/Postdoc council to expand my network and meet other young researchers at SciLifeLab, as well as help contribute in bringing the SciLifeLab community together.

Sami Saarenpää (Alpha 3, PhD student at KTH)

Research topic: Spatially resolved transcriptomics in plants.

Council topic: Campus Solna seminar series

Motivation: Initially I wanted to get to know what other people do in SciLifeLab and that’s why I was up to organising the seminar series. In addition, council helps to build a stronger community where non of the PhDs and PostDocs shouldn’t feel left alone.

Vaishnovi Sekar (Gamma 5, PhD student at Stockholm University)

Research topic: My study focuses on various aspects of microRNA biogenesis and function. Currently, I am working on a project to identify microRNAs and their interaction with their targets in individual cells.

Council topic: Chair, BAM seminar, Science Talks 2021, Website

Motivation: I joined the PhD/Post-doc council to meet with other researchers at SciLifeLab and to help organise seminars and events to talk about science happening at SciLifeLab, within and outside the institution.

Aditi Shenoy (Alpha 6, PhD student at Stockholm University)

Research topic: I’m studying sub-cellular localization and intrinsic disorder in proteins. I develop methods to predict these protein features using amino acid sequence information.

Council topic: BAM seminar, Social media

Motivation: I joined the PhD council to meet with other researchers at SciLifeLab and contribute to events that can bring the SciLifeLab community together.

Taras Sych (Gamma 3, Postdoc at Karolinska Institute)

Research topic: I am interested in plasma membrane dynamics in metabolic diseases and host-pathogen interactions. I employ advanced fluorescence microscopy in combination with synthetic biology approaches to resolve the mechanisms of cholesterol transport as well as viral entry to and release from the host cells.

Council topic: PhD & Postdoc Council Intro Meeting

Marcel Tarbier (Gamma 5, Postdoc at Karolinska Institute)

Research topic: I’m using single-cell technologies to study gene expression, variation and covariation to better understand basic principles of gene regulation.

Council topic: Secretary, Science Talks 2021, Website

Franziska Ragaller (Gamma 3, PhD student at Karolinska Institutet)

Council topic: BAM seminar
